Evaporative Condensing Systems
A concept that was pioneered by Mammoth more than 50 years ago is more important than ever in improving the efficiency of DX chillers—the evaporative condensing system. Most DX systems still use air-cooled outdoor condensing units—a fan moving outdoor air over a condensing coil. Mammoth also offers the option of using a packaged water-cooled condenser. This is an option worth considering, because:
- Water is a superior heat-transfer medium; thus, unit efficiency is dramatically improved.
- Evaporative condensing increases unit capacities when outdoor temperature levels are high. That’s when you need capacity the most.
- It allows you to use the system in economizer mode when temperatures are mild, thereby dramatically reducing energy usage.
- Because of the improved heat-transfer capability of water, the footprint of the condensing unit can be up to 50% smaller. This smaller footprint is important in some rooftop and grade-level designs.
- Evaporative condensing systems are not only smaller, but are also quieter than air-cooled condensers of the same capacity.
- Retrofit installations can increase unit capacity significantly with the same size or smaller building electrical service.
If your priorities are efficiency, saving space, or increasing the capacity of your present DX system, an evaporative condenser could be the solution.
